Trump wants Middle East nations to join Abraham Accords

WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump said on Thursday it was important that Middle Eastern countries join the Abraham Accords, saying it will ensure peace in the region.

“Now that the nuclear arsenal being ‘created’ by Iran has been totally OBLITERATED, it is very important to me that all Middle Eastern Countries join the Abraham Accords,” Trump wrote in a social media post.

It seems he clearly used social media yet again to convey his message.

He added, “This will insure peace in the region. Thank you for your attention to this matter.”

As part of the Abraham Accords, signed during Trump’s first term in office, four Muslim-majority countries agreed to normalize diplomatic relations with Israel after US mediation.

However, efforts to expand the accords have been complicated by a soaring death toll and starvation in Gaza.

IS KUSHNER STILL A PLAYER?

Earlier in May, CNN had reported before Trump’s visit to the Gulf States that his son-in-law Jared Kushner, who served as a chief Middle East negotiator in Trump’s first term, was advising him on the related matters.

Quoting sources, it also said, “But Kushner and other Trump advisers have also been privately plotting the more ambitious goal of expanding the Abraham Accords.”

A KEY OBJECTIVE

Earlier in June, US Special Envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff described expanding the Abraham Accords as one of the key objectives of the Trump administration.

“One of the president’s key objectives is that the Abraham Accords be expanded. We think we’re going to have some pretty big announcements on countries that are now coming in to the Abraham Peace Accords.”

However, no announcement has been made since then. Trump’s latest post may be a sign of his frustration.
