KAMPALA: A 24-year-old TikToker named Edward Iboa was sentenced to six years in prison for posting a video on TikTok that insulted the Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, his family, and the son of the army chief.

According to reports, the Ugandan Tiktoker admitted to the charges and issued an apology during the court proceedings. Despite his apology, the judge presiding over the case noted that Edward did not demonstrate genuine remorse for his actions.
The judge stated that the language used in Edward’s video was “vulgar” and “disrespectful” towards the Ugandan president and his wife.
The court justified the sentence as a necessary measure to ensure that Edward “understands” the gravity of his actions and to deter from “similar behaviour” in the future. The sentence is seen reflecting as Uganda’s stringent laws regarding speech perceived as critical or offensive towards national leaders.
Edward’s case showcases the delicate balance between freedom of expression and legal boundaries in Uganda, where criticism of political figures can lead to severe legal consequences.
The incident sparked debate about the extent of permissible criticism and the consequences citizens may face for expressing dissenting views through social media platforms like TikTok.
