UN adopts “Pact for the Future” despite Russian opposition

Pact for the Future

NEWYORK: Russia’s attempt to defer adoption of the “Pact for the Future” at the Summit of the Future held this Sunday, was dismissed after a motion to reject the appeal was supported by a majority of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly.

The “Pact for the Future” strives to revive multilateralism and reassert the primacy of international law.

The UN secretary general, Antonio Guterres, outlined that the pact would include efforts to address climate change, artificial intelligence, peace operations, including the promotion of disarmament, as well as financing development and reforms to the UN security council. The pact strives to revive multilateralism and reassert the primacy of international law.

At an earlier press conference Guterres had said that “international challenges are moving faster than our ability to solve them” and that “our institutions simply can’t keep up.”

The pact for the future was introduced to confront this issue, with leaders pledging to buttress the multilateral system in order to “keep pace with a changing world.”

Russia found the pact to be “unbalanced”, stating that it represented western interests. Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Vershinin stated that those unsatisfied with the pact had not been given opportunity for further negotiations.

Vershinin expressed the desire to include an amendment which would underscore the principle of non-interference in regards to the internal affairs of states. However, a motion to reject the move was introduced by the Democratic Republic of the Congo and subsequently accepted by a majority in the general assembly.
