US addresses Indian agent extradition in Sikh assassination case

WASHINGTON: The United States (US) Department of State Spokesperson, Matthew Miller, addressed questions regarding the extradition of an Indian agent implicated in the assassination attempt of a Sikh separatist on the US soil.

The inquiry comes in the wake of heightened attention on the hardliner Narendra Modi-led Indian government who assassinated several Sikh separatist leaders internationally, including in Canada.

Miller stated that the extradition of the Indian agent was a legal matter. “We have spoken to the government in this regard”.

United States reaction to foreign assassination attempt of its own citizen on its soil has been pretty mellow, especially when compared to its condemnation of Russian government carrying out similar actions in Europe drew vociferous condemnation from the US government.

The Indian government conducted its own ‘investigation’ into the  allegations and submitted the ‘findings’ to the US officials.

The spokesperson mentioned that the Indian officials were briefed on the investigation two weeks ago. “We have made it clear that we will continue to discuss the investigation”.

Miller mentioned that the Indian government has expressed a desire for “real accountability” in the matter.
