US denounces Taliban’s moral enforcement in Afghanistan

WASHINGTON: The United States (US) reiterated its position of not supporting or providing funding to the Taliban, while condemning their arbitrary enforcement of what they call morality as a violation of Afghan human rights.

In a press briefing, US Department of State spokesperson Matthew Miller clarified, “The US does not endorse or finance the Taliban.”

Miller pointed to a recent United Nations (UN) report documenting the Taliban’s mistreatment of women and their imposition of moral standards in Afghanistan, stating it undermines the basic rights of Afghan citizens.

“The Taliban’s actions, particularly towards women, are closely monitored,” Miller remarked. He urged the Taliban to uphold their commitments to both the Afghan people and the international community.

The spokesperson stated that the Taliban’s standing with the global community depends on their actions. Miller also stressed the importance of enabling journalists worldwide to conduct their work safely.
