Indian woman caught shoplifting in US

NEW DELHI: The US Embassy in India has issued a fresh advisory to visa holders and applicants after an Indian woman was reportedly detained for shoplifting at a Target store in the United States.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the embassy cautioned that even minor legal violations—such as theft, assault, or burglary, can have serious immigration consequences.

It stated that individuals involved in such activities could face visa revocation and become ineligible for future US visas.

The advisory highlighted that a person’s visa may be cancelled if they are associated with criminal behaviour, regardless of the severity.

The message holds particular importance for Indian students, professionals, and tourists who frequently travel to the US for work, education, or leisure.

“Law and order are paramount in the United States,” the embassy said, adding that violating US laws could lead not just to legal trouble but also to long-term visa restrictions. “The US expects all foreign visitors to fully comply with its laws,” it warned.

An Indian woman, while on vacation in the US, was caught shoplifting merchandise worth $1300.
