WEB DESK: In a significant operation, US forces successfully intercepted advanced conventional weapons and other lethal aid from Iran intended for Houthi-held areas of Yemen.
The operation took place on January 28 in the Arabian Sea, as reported by the US Central Command on Thursday.
According to the statement, more than 200 packages were seized from the vessel, revealing a cache of medium-range ballistic missile components, explosives, unmanned underwater/surface vehicle (UUV/USV) components, military-grade communication and network equipment, anti-tank guided missile launcher assemblies, and various other military components.
US Centcom commander Michael Erik Kurilla expressed concern over Iran’s persistent supply of advanced conventional weapons to the Houthis, emphasising that such actions pose a direct threat to the safety of international shipping and hinder the free flow of commerce.
“Iran’s continued supply of advanced conventional weapons to the Houthis continues to undermine the safety of international shipping and the free flow of commerce,” stated Commander Kurilla.
The backdrop to this interception is the ongoing conflict in Yemen, where Houthi militants have been launching drones and missiles against international commercial shipping since mid-November.
The militants claim to be acting in solidarity with Palestinians, protesting Israel’s military actions in Gaza. This interception serves as a crucial step in preventing the further escalation of tensions in the region.
