Bangladesh’s Awami League, the party of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, will not give up following her ouster this week, Hasina’s son, Sajeeb Wazed Joy, said late on Wednesday (August 7) in a Facebook post.

The party was ready to hold talks with opponents and a new interim government that is set to take power on Thursday (August 8), Joy said in his video post.

Bangladesh: Interim government to be sworn in today

“I had said my family will no longer be involved in politics, but the way our party leaders and workers are being attacked, we cannot give up,” Joy said.

Bangladesh’s new interim government is to be headed by Nobel Peace Prize-winning economist Muhammad Yunus. The change in government comes after weeks of tumultuous student protests that forced Hasina to resign and flee to India on Monday (August 5).
