World Health Day 2024: Advocating for global wellness

'My health, my right'

Today, on April 7, the world marks World Health Day, an annual observance aimed at spotlighting pressing health issues on a global scale. From longevity to happiness, health permeates all facets of life, growing in significance, particularly in the wake of the pandemic.

World Health Day also honours the founding of the World Health Organisation (WHO), which was established on April 7 in 1948.

The theme for this year’s World Health Day, ‘My health, my right’, emphasises the fundamental notion that access to essential health services is not a privilege but a fundamental right. Despite this principle being enshrined in the constitutions of at least 140 countries, the practical realisation of this right remains elusive in many parts of the world.

“This year’s theme was chosen to champion the right of everyone, everywhere to have access to quality health services, education, and information, as well as safe drinking water, clean air, good nutrition, quality housing, decent working and environmental conditions, and freedom from discrimination,” WHO said on its website.

The journey of World Health Day dates back to 1948, when the WHO’s First Health Assembly convened, resolving to designate April 7 as a day to raise awareness of global health issues and mobilise support to address them. Since then, each year has seen a specific health theme take centre stage, ranging from mental health to maternal and child care, underscoring priority areas for the WHO.

The significance of World Health Day cannot be overstated, particularly in the contemporary context where health concerns transcend borders. It serves as a platform for various activities aimed at sharing information, raising awareness, and educating people on a myriad of health issues, disorders, and mental health concerns.

Small tweaks to our daily lives can work wonders for our health and overall wellbeing. These could be as easy as staying sufficiently hydrated, avoiding unhealthy foods and maintaining a minimum activity level. Or these could be slightly more time and attention intensive like getting regular checkups and avoiding exposure to environmental hazards.
