XI against some nations imposing 'house rules' on others

TIANJIN: Chinese President Xi Jinping on Monday opposed double standards and rejected the practice of powerful countries imposing “house rules” on others.

He also proposed the Global Governance Initiative (GGI) and called on the countries to work in concert for a more just and equitable global governance system.

In his address to the SCO Council of Heads of States summit, Xi said all countries, regardless of size, strength and wealth, were equal participants, decisionmakers, and beneficiaries in global governance.

“There should be no double standards, and the house rules of a few countries must not be imposed upon others,” he noted.

The CGI, which XI presented at the SCO summit, revolves around five principles — adhering to sovereign equality, abiding by international rule of law, practicing multilateralism, advocating the people-centered approach, and focusing on taking real actions.

Meanwhile, the Chinese president — the leader behind groundbreaking Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) — said the Cold War mentality, hegemonism and protectionism continued haunting the world.

He added that new threats and challenges had been only increasing, and the world found itself in a new period of turbulence and transformation. “Global governance has come to a new crossroads,” Xi remarked.

Xi stressed firmly safeguarding the status and authority of the UN, and ensuring its irreplaceable and key role in global governance.

At the same time, he said the SCO should step up to play a leading role and set an example in carrying out the GGI, and remain a force for stability in the volatile world.
