OAKLAND: Former NFL running back Doug Martin has been identified as the man who died following a confrontation with Oakland police early Saturday morning, multiple news outlets report. Earlier there were reports of such a casualty but now the man has been identified as the 36-year-old footballer.

The Oakland native’s death was confirmed by his family in a statement shared with media on Sunday. “It is with great sadness to inform you all that Doug Martin passed away Saturday morning,” the family said. “Cause of death is currently unconfirmed. Please respect our privacy at this time.”

According to initial reports, Doug reportedly became ‘unresponsive’ after a brief struggle with officers responding to a possible home break-in in the Chabot Park neighborhood.

He was later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. The cause of death has not yet been confirmed.

HOW THE EVENTS UNFOLDED?

According to police, officers were called to a residence on Ettrick Street around 4:15 AM local time on Saturday amid reports of a burglary. They were also informed that the suspect may have been experiencing a medical emergency.

When officers located the man inside the home, police say a struggle took place as they attempted to detain him. Shortly after being taken into custody, the man became unresponsive.

Paramedics on the scene administered aid before transporting him to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. The Alameda County Coroner’s Bureau has not released further details, citing an active investigation.

WHO WAS DOUG MARTIN?

Martin, a standout running back at Boise State, was drafted in the first round by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2012. He enjoyed a strong start to his career, earning two Pro Bowl selections and rushing for over 5,000 yards and 30 touchdowns over seven seasons. He finished his NFL career with the Oakland Raiders in 2018.

Off the field, Martin faced personal struggles, including a suspension in 2016 for violating the league’s substance abuse policy. He later sought treatment and expressed a commitment to personal growth.

Both the Buccaneers and the Raiders issued tributes over the weekend. Tampa Bay called him “a fan favorite” and praised his “record-setting rookie season.” The Raiders also extended condolences “to Doug’s family during this difficult time.”

Multiple agencies, including the Oakland Police Department, are investigating the circumstances of Martin’s death.
