Apple labels iPhone 6 as obsolete, iPhone 8 Red as vintage

iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone 6

WEB DESK: Apple has expanded its public-facing vintage and obsolete product list, including several older iPhone and iPad models.

The iPhone 6 Plus is now classified as “obsolete” worldwide by Apple. This designation means that Apple Stores and Apple Authorised Service Providers will no longer provide repairs or hardware services for this device.

Apple defines a product as “obsolete” when seven years have elapsed since its last distribution for sale. The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus were introduced in September 2014, boasting larger screens and Apple Pay support.

While the iPhone 6 Plus was discontinued in September 2016, the iPhone 6 remained available through select resellers in certain countries for a few additional years, thus not meeting the criteria for obsolescence yet.

On the software front, iOS 13 ceased to support the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus in 2019. Regarding the iPad lineup, Apple now categorises the fourth-generation iPad mini as “vintage.”

This status indicates that more than five years have passed since Apple ceased distributing the device for sale.

Despite this classification, Apple Stores and Apple Authorised Service Providers will continue to offer repairs for vintage products for up to two additional years, contingent upon parts availability.

Additionally, Apple has included the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus in its “vintage” products list, specifically in the (PRODUCT) Red colour variant only.

Other colour options remained available for a longer duration; hence, they do not yet qualify as “vintage.”
