Japanese voice actress behind Naruto, Atsuko Tanaka, dies

WEB DESK: Renowned Japanese voice actress Atsuko Tanaka, famous for her roles in “Naruto” and “Ghost in the Shell,” passed away at the age of 61 on Tuesday.

Tanaka had been undergoing treatment for a prolonged illness, though the Japanese actor’s family refused to reveal details.

Tanaka’s son announced her death through social media, thanking supporters and industry peers for their care. He described his mother as a figure of seriousness and grace, with a touch of playfulness, reflecting on her career and character.

Atsuko Tanaka began her voiceover career in 1985. The Japanese voice performer would soon go on to become a leading voice actor in the Japanese anime industry.

She is best known for voicing Motoko Kusanagi in “Ghost in the Shell,” a role that earned her widespread acclaim. The Japanese performer also brought to life notable characters such as Lisa Lisa in “JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure,” Konan in “Naruto,” and Hanami in “Jujutsu Kaisen.”

Her voice also featured in the “Bayonetta” video game series.

Tanaka’s work was not limited to anime. She lent her voice to characters in video games like Kaine in “Nier,” Reina in “Yakuza,” and Trish in “Devil May Cry.” She also provided Japanese voiceovers for international film stars, including Nicole Kidman and Rachel Weisz.

Following her passing, various franchises and projects paid tribute to Tanaka. Ghost in the Shell honoured her contribution to the character of Motoko Kusanagi, while Nier expressed sorrow for the loss of a cherished voice actress.

The anime “Frieren” also offered condolences to her family and friends, while acknowledging her impact in the industry.

Tanaka’s most recent role was in “Yatagarasu: The Raven Does Not Choose Its Master.” It is unclear whether she had completed her work for upcoming projects.
