ISLAMABAD: In a recent meeting at the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI), Swedish Ambassador Alexandra Berg von Linde highlighted growing presence of Swedish businesses in Pakistan.
She said more than 40 Swedish companies, including well-known brands have been operating in the country for decades.
However, these companies face significant challenges such as high tax rates, expensive energy, and difficulties in transferring foreign currency.
“These companies have played a key role in Pakistan’s growth and understand the local business environment well,” she said. The ambassador said that while there is potential for investment, it is essential to address these issues to create a more welcoming environment for foreign investors.
The meeting which gathered KCCI officials and Swedish representatives also focused on expanding collaboration in areas like sustainability, digitalisation, and green transitions, which von Linde described as beneficial for both countries. “For Pakistan to remain competitive in EU market, a green transition is crucial,” she said.
Von Linde also noted the efforts of Swedish Business Council in promoting trade between the two countries calling it an important entry point for Swedish companies looking to explore Pakistani market.
She spoke about the EU’s GSP+ trade framework praising it as a system that promotes economic growth but with certain conditions related to human rights, labor standards, and environmental governance, all of which Pakistan is working on currently.
The meeting took place as Sweden and Pakistan celebrate 75 years of diplomatic ties.
