Motorcycle sales surge 18 per cent despite high prices: PAMA

Honda motorcycle sales surge

ISLAMABAD: Even though bike prices have gone up a lot in recent years, sales of motorcycles and three-wheelers in Pakistan increased by 18.02 per cent in August 2024, reaching 104,234 units. This is compared to 88,318 units sold in August of last year.

Similarly, sales were also up by 22.64 per cent when compared to July 2024, when 84,993 units were sold.

According to the Pakistan Automotive Manufacturers Association (PAMA), sales in the first two months of FY25 (July and August) hit 189,227 units, which is 16.87 per cent higher than the 161,906 units sold in the same period last year.

Production also saw a jump. In August 2024, 107,154 motorcycles and three-wheelers were produced, which is 29.69 per cent higher than the 82,620 units made in the same month last year. On a monthly basis, production rose by 25.3 per cent, with 85,516 units made in July 2024.

Honda continues to dominate the market, even though its motorcycles are among the most expensive. Honda sold 90,483 bikes in August, giving it an 86.81 per cent market share. One reason for this could be that people trust Honda for reliable motorcycles, and Chinese bikes, which used to be cheaper, now start at around Rs100,000.

Honda’s August sales grew by 28.79 per cent compared to July, and 20.53 per cent higher than August 2023.

United Auto Motorcycle and Suzuki came in second and third, with sales of 7,447 and 1,906 units respectively in August 2024. Sazgar Three Wheeler followed with 1,643 units sold, which is up 1.17 per cent from the previous month and 50.87 per cent higher than August 2023.

In the first two months of FY25, Honda sold 160,738 units, compared to 137,083 units in the same period last year.
