Health activists sound alarm over potential introduction of 10-stick cigarette packs

ISLAMABAD: Health activists have expressed profound concern over recent efforts by the tobacco industry to introduce 10-stick cigarette packs, warning of significant economic and health repercussions.

They argue that allowing such packs will not only undermine tobacco control efforts but also directly impact vulnerable populations, particularly children and low-income individuals.

Country Head of Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids Malik Imran Ahmed emphasized the troubling nature of the tobacco industry’s pursuit of 10-stick packs.

This move, he stated, poses a threat to progress in tobacco control and targets segments of society most susceptible to tobacco-related harms. Many countries worldwide have banned the sale of single-stick and small-stick packets due to their accessibility to children, youth, and low-income groups, resulting in substantial health burdens.

Imran further challenged the tobacco industry’s claim of being a significant economic contributor, asserting that this contribution is largely compelled through direct taxes.

He highlighted concerns about potential illicit practices, such as under-reporting and product pooling in the black market, should 10-stick packets be permitted for export and subsequently re-enter the local market. To safeguard public health, Imran urged the government to remain vigilant and reject any introduction of these packets.

Programme Manager at SPARC Dr Khalil Ahmad Dogar underscored the widespread impact of tobacco consumption, with nearly 19.7 per cent of adults in Pakistan currently using tobacco. He called upon the government to take proactive measures to protect public health and shield vulnerable populations from exploitation by the tobacco industry.

The health advocates urge authorities to prioritize citizen well-being and reject proposals that jeopardize public health and economic stability. INP
