ISLAMABAD: The Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the federal cabinet made changes to the gas supply priority list on Wednesday. They decided that gas for industrial processes would now have the same priority as gas for homes and businesses.
According to Dawn, the meeting was led by Federal Finance and Revenue Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb. They also decided that industries using captive power (their own power generation) would get less priority, similar to the Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) sector.
The minister said this change would help industries that need gas for their operations. The Ministry of Energy suggested this change to the ECC.
The ECC also talked about a proposal from the Ministry of National Food Security. They agreed to provide Rs238.42 million to settle unpaid amounts from a wheat subsidy program from 2015-16. The ECC reviewed recommendations from the Senate Standing Committee on Finance and Revenue, and asked the ministry to use the current budget to pay off these old claims.
Another proposal discussed was a loan of Rs656 million for the Pakistan Central Cotton Committee (PCCC) so they could pay their staff and pensions. However, the ECC decided that the PCCC should be closed down. They asked for a plan to be submitted to the Cabinet Committee for Rightsizing of the Federal Government.
The ECC also looked at a summary from the Ministry of Communications about the “Kalkatak-Chitral 48 km (Section-III) Road Project (N-45).” They gave permission for the Ministry of Communications and the National Highway Authority to start the process for hiring companies for the project, following the public procurement rules.
