Pakistan is set to launch its first locally produced four-wheeled electric vehicle (EV) in December, marking a significant milestone in the country’s efforts to promote sustainable transportation. This development was announced during a meeting held on Saturday under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif, where the use of EVs was discussed.
According to Business Recorder, the government has issued 49 licences for the local production of two and three-wheeled electric vehicles (EVs) since 2022, with 25 factories already operational. The first license for four-wheeled electric vehicles was issued in September 2024, with the first electric car expected to hit the market in December.
Dewan Farooque Motors Limited (DFML) informed its stakeholders that it has commenced production of EVs at its assembly plant, after receiving approval from the Engineering Development Board (EDB).
Chinese electric vehicle giant BYD has also announced its entry into Pakistan, making it one of the newest markets for the company. During a meeting, Prime Minister Shehbaz directed relevant authorities to present a comprehensive financial model for EVs, highlighting their benefits, including saving valuable foreign exchange on petrol and diesel consumption and being environmentally friendly.
The Prime Minister also directed the relevant authorities to finalize the Electric Vehicles policy by November and called for improvements in licencing regulations related to EV manufacturing in Pakistan, emphasising the need for necessary deliberation with all provinces, federal agencies, and stakeholders regarding the EV policy.
Furthermore, as part of efforts to promote EV adoption, the government has decided to distribute e-motor bikes to high-performing students of government schools, similar to the laptop scheme. Additionally, the Capital Development Authority was directed to prepare a comprehensive plan for the electrification of public transport in Islamabad.
The government also plans to set up recharge stations for electric vehicles on a priority basis along motorways, GT Road (National Highway), N-65, and N-70. The power ministry has drafted standards for EV charging stations, and the government is considering offering them affordable electricity.
