Sam Altman announces OpenAI’s GPT-4.5 model ‘Orion’ set for launch soon

SAN FRANCISCO: OpenAI is on the verge of launching a new artificial intelligence model called GPT-4.5, following some challenges faced during its development last year. In a series of posts on the social media platform X, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced that the model, internally referred to as Orion, is expected to be released in the upcoming weeks.

Bloomberg News previously reported in November that Orion had not achieved the performance levels that DeepAI was aiming for. The introduction of GPT-4.5 will signify a pivotal shift for OpenAI, as Altman indicated that it will be the last model released that does not utilize enhanced computing power to emulate human reasoning. The company has already adopted this reasoning approach in some of its latest models, including o1 and o3.

In his post, Altman mentioned that OpenAI plans to integrate its GPT models, which powered the original ChatGPT chatbot, with the newer o-series models to develop AI systems capable of determining the appropriate amount of time to consider a query before generating a response.

He said the aim of simplifying user experience, alleviating the burden of navigating an increasingly complex array of options. “We want AI to ‘just work’ for you; we realize how complicated our model and product offerings have become,” Altman stated. “We dislike the model picker as much as you do.”

Additionally, Altman revealed that OpenAI is progressing toward the release of a GPT-5 model later this year, which will synthesise much of the company’s AI technology, including o3. While a smaller version, o3-mini, has been released, the full version has yet to be launched. An OpenAI representative declined to provide further comments beyond Altman’s announcements.
