WEB DESK: In a groundbreaking move, a Dutch company has unveiled ‘The Squad,’ a sleek solar-powered electric car specifically designed for urban commuting.

Priced at a modest Rs1.76 million (approximately $6,250), this innovative electric car has created quite a buzz.

Although it’s not set to hit Pakistani roads, it serves as a source of inspiration for prominent Pakistani automakers and startups.

The introduction of such environmentally friendly cars could revolutionise the transportation landscape in Pakistan, where rising petrol prices burden daily commuters while combating Pakistan’s escalating environmental pollution.

The country is currently grappling with alarming levels of smog, making sustainable transportation options more vital than ever.

Developed by Dutch startup Squad Mobility, co-founded by electric vehicle experts Robert Hoevers and Chris Klok, ‘The Squad’ stands out as a lightweight and efficient solution tailored for city driving.

This solar-powered vehicle made its European debut in May 2022, where it received widespread acclaim.

Notably, it falls under the category of light electric vehicles (LEVs), potentially requiring only a moped licence in some countries, bypassing the need for a full driver’s licence.

The car’s efficiency is attributed to its 2kW rear in-wheel motors, powered by four 1.6 kWh battery packs. The vehicle features a solar panel on its roof, generating approximately 19 miles of range on a sunny day—an ideal solution for navigating city traffic.

While a full charge provides around 62 miles of range from its four battery packs, ‘The Squad’ cruises at a moderate speed of 28 mph, making it best suited for urban roads rather than highways.

Excitingly, Squad Mobility plans to expand its lineup, with a four-passenger version currently in development.

The global interest ‘The Squad’ has garnered highlights its potential to transform the future of transportation.

While Pakistan may not be its first destination, the vehicle serves as a beacon of hope, inspiring local initiatives to explore similar eco-friendly avenues.

As countries worldwide embrace sustainable solutions, the introduction of cheap solar-powered cars in Pakistan could be the driving force behind a smog-free, greener, cleaner future for country and the planet.
