Intraday trade: PKR gains 7 paisa against USD


US dollar in Pakistani rupee

KARACHI: The Pakistani rupee (PKR) showed slight improvement against the US dollar (USD) on the last trading day of the week, appreciating by 7 paisa in early intraday trade. Currency exchange companies quoted the dollar at Rs279.75 during the session.

Since the start of the current fiscal year, the rupee has weakened by Rs1.47 or 0.53 per cent against the dollar. It has also slipped by Rs1.27 or 0.45 per cent since the beginning of 2025.

Previous day’s close

On Thursday, the rupee gained 5.33 paisa, or 0.02 per cent, in the interbank market, closing at Rs279.82 against the US dollar, compared to the previous close of Rs279.87.

The day’s trading saw the rupee hit an intraday high of Rs279.90 (bid) and a low of Rs279.80 (ask). In the open market, the dollar was being bought at Rs279.20 and sold at Rs281.50 by exchange companies.

PKR’s performance against other currencies

The rupee’s performance was mixed against other major currencies. It strengthened by 1.45 paisa, or 0.02 per cent, against the UAE dirham, closing at Rs76.19. However, it lost Rs2.34, or 0.65 per cent, against the British pound, settling at Rs361.03 from Rs358.69.

Similarly, the rupee weakened by 9.13 paisa, or 0.24 per cent, against the Chinese yuan, ending the day at Rs38.64. In contrast, it gained 44.98 paisa, or 0.14 per cent, against the Swiss franc, closing at Rs314.65.

The rupee saw a significant loss against the euro, depreciating by Rs3.73, or 1.25 per cent, to settle at Rs302.07 compared to the previous day’s value of Rs298.34. Against the Japanese yen, it declined by 1.28 paisa, or 0.68 per cent, closing at Rs1.8859 from Rs1.8731.

Finally, the local currency gained a modest 2.01 paisa, or 0.03 per cent, against the Saudi riyal, closing at Rs74.60.
