A Miss Universe contestant has revealed what happened behind the scenes following a viral confrontation between Miss Mexico and pageant executive Nawat Itsaragrisil.
Speaking to People, Miss Haiti Melissa Sapini said she was among the contestants who walked out after Itsaragrisil publicly accused Miss Mexico Fátima Bosch of refusing to take part in a social media photoshoot. Bosch denied the claim, but the criticism continued, prompting her to leave the room with several other contestants.
The incident unfolded during what was meant to be a sashing ceremony led by Miss Universe Victoria Kjær Theilvig. Sapini said the atmosphere shifted suddenly when Itsaragrisil claimed that 20 countries had refused to promote Thailand and warned that those who did not cooperate could be removed from the competition.
He then asked Bosch to stand, as cameramen moved in to film the women’s reactions.
“It was scary,” Sapini told People, describing confusion over whether to follow staff members who urged them to leave or remain in the room to avoid being disqualified.
Several contestants, including Bosch, later gathered in a hotel room with Theilvig and other delegates. Sapini said some contestants were being reassured while others remained shaken by the confrontation.
Although she initially did not care about her position in the competition, Sapini admitted she later feared the impact the incident could have on her family and national organisation.
Itsaragrisil has since issued a public apology, saying he regretted making anyone feel uncomfortable.
Now 22, Sapini said the incident has left her questioning her future in pageantry, as she felt she was not given a fair or equal opportunity to compete after making significant personal sacrifices.
