Scottish fashion designer Pam Hogg, known for her bold, eccentric creations worn by stars including Rihanna, Kate Moss, Lady Gaga and Kylie Minogue, has died, her family has announced.
In a statement shared on Instagram, her family said they were “deeply saddened” by the passing of “our beloved Pamela” and confirmed she died peacefully at St Joseph’s Hospice in Hackney, surrounded by close friends and family. No cause of death was given.
“Pamela’s creative spirit and body of work touched the lives of many people of all ages,” the statement read. “She leaves a magnificent legacy that will continue to inspire, bring joy and challenge us to live beyond the confines of convention.”
Tributes poured in across fashion and entertainment. Broadcaster Fearne Cotton described Hogg as “a joy to know”, Kim Jones called her “our warrior queen”, while designer Bella Freud wrote that the fashion world would be poorer without her “shining brilliance”. Garbage frontwoman Shirley Manson hailed her as “our revered Scottish fashion queen”.
Born in Paisley, Hogg studied at the Glasgow School of Art before continuing her education at the Royal College of Art in London. She launched her first collection, Psychedelic Jungle, in 1981, inspired by the atmosphere of London’s Blitz Club scene.
Her work was defined by futuristic silhouettes, punk energy and androgynous styling. The catsuit became a defining element of her aesthetic and was worn by artists including Minogue, Rihanna and Lady Gaga.
Her designs were also worn by Naomi Campbell, Claudia Schiffer, Björk, Grace Jones, Kelly Rowland and Siouxsie Sioux. Princess Diana was photographed wearing one of her creations, and Princess Eugenie commissioned a custom look in 2013.
In 2016, Hogg designed the Brit Awards statuettes, creating 13 trophies distinguished by glitter and metallic elements. She also pursued music, supporting Debbie Harry and The Pogues before forming the band Doll.
