‘Reacher’ creator Lee Child steps away, hands franchise to brother Andrew

Lee Child, the author behind the Jack Reacher series, has announced he is officially stepping away from the franchise after nearly three decades. With the release of Exit Strategy, the 30th novel in the series, Child confirmed that full creative control now rests with his younger brother, Andrew Child. “It’s all his now,” Lee said.

The move comes as the Prime Video adaptation starring Alan Ritchson prepares for its fourth season. The transition has been in motion for several years. In 2020, Andrew co-authored The Sentinel, marking the beginning of a gradual handover.

Andrew, who has been familiar with Lee’s manuscripts since the series’ inception, described himself as the “original Reacher fan.” With Exit Strategy, he releases his second solo novel in the franchise, continuing the character’s legacy while introducing subtle updates.

Jack Reacher was born out of a career shift. After Lee was fired from his television job in the 1990s, he turned to writing to support his family, resulting in the 1997 release of Killing Floor. The series would go on to achieve global success, with readers forming a lasting connection to the character.

Andrew’s involvement has included modernising certain habits and dialogue without altering Reacher’s core identity. “What we want,” Andrew said, “is for people to go to the bookstore to buy the new Reacher, not the new Child.”

For Lee, writing Reacher was like “settling down once a year with a really good friend.” Andrew now carries that responsibility, preserving the character’s identity while guiding the series into its next phase.
