35th National Games: Pakistan Army dominates with 71 gold medals

Karachi: The 35th National Games are in full swing and the battle for medals among athletes is heating up with Pakistan Army strengthening its lead by winning a total of 71 gold medals.

On Tuesday, 12 more gold medals were decided in track and field events with WAPDA’s Fatima Hussain continuing her winning streak in the women’s javelin throw with a throw of 42.38 meters to claim gold Pakistan Army’s Faryal Farooq won gold in the women’s discus throw with a record 38.21-meter throw while WAPDA’s Ishrat Fatima took silver and HEC’s Khadija claimed bronze

In the women’s 200 meters race, Faiqa Riaz won her second gold medal of the games while WAPDA’s Arm Shahzadi led the 800 meters race Other highlights included WAPDA’s Musarrat Shaheen winning gold in women’s 400 meters hurdles Army’s Muhammad Naeem taking gold in men’s 110 meters hurdles Army’s Qasim Faiz winning the 20 km race walk WAPDA’s Amara claiming gold in women’s 5 km race walk Army’s Asif winning gold in men’s pole vault HEC’s Imtiaz Rehman taking gold in triple jump and Army’s Waqas Akbar winning gold in men’s 800 meters

Weightlifting competitions started at Scot Headquarters with four women’s categories on the first day Gold medal winners included WAPDA’s Shafaq Waheed in 48 kg Army’s Nida Fatima in 53 kg Army’s Arjumand Khan in 58 kg and Army’s Noor Fatima in 63 kg

In fencing HEC’s Kareema Parveen won gold by defeating teammate Faryal Shahid 15-13

Wrestling competitions also began with top wrestler Inam Butt winning gold on the first day while other winners included WAPDA’s Junaid in 57 kg Army’s Asadullah in 79 kg and Punjab’s Abdullah in 70 kg.

In squash Pakistan Army won the women’s team title by beating KP 2-1 and also defeated WAPDA in the men’s final to win gold.

On the first day of swimming Army won five golds in women’s events Sindh won one through Hareem Malik and Army’s Bisma Khan and Jahan Ara Nabi won two each In men’s swimming Army won five golds while WAPDA won one.

In shooting Army’s total golds reached 11 while Navy has 9 Islamabad won its first gold in the women’s tennis team event by beating WAPDA 2-1 while in men’s tennis Army beat WAPDA to win gold

Pakistan Army remains at the top with 71 gold medals while WAPDA is second with 27 golds According to the latest medal table Pakistan Army has 71 gold 29 silver and 18 bronze WAPDA has 27 gold 17 silver and 19 bronze Pakistan Navy has 10 gold 9 silver and 12 bronze Pakistan Air Force has 5 gold 6 silver and 7 bronze HEC has 5 gold 21 silver and 27 bronze Punjab has 5 gold 15 silver and 24 bronze Sindh has 2 gold 12 silver and 21 bronze Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has 2 gold 6 silver and 18 bronze

Other teams include Balochistan with 5 silver and 7 bronze Railways with 3 silver and 13 bronze Islamabad with 1 silver and 2 bronze Police with 14 bronze Gilgit-Baltistan with 2 bronze and Azad Jammu and Kashmir with 1 bronze
