Alexander Morton, the Scottish actor best known for his role in Monarch of the Glen, has died at the age of 81, with co-stars and colleagues paying heartfelt tributes to his life and work.
Morton, affectionately known as Sandy, built a career spanning decades across television, film and theatre, becoming a familiar face through a wide range of British productions.
Co-stars share heartfelt tributes
Robert Carlyle paid tribute to Morton, describing him as a “brilliant actor” and one of the kindest people he had known.
He said working with him was an “education”, praising his naturalistic style and recalling how deeply he influenced those around him.
Actor Gavin Mitchell also shared a personal tribute, calling Morton a “titan of a man and an actor” and reflecting on the guidance he received over the years.
He described him as warm, wise and generous, adding that he would miss their conversations and the lasting impact Morton had on his life and career.
Career spanning decades of British television
Morton began his acting journey in the 1960s after training in London, later appearing in a wide range of productions.
He gained early recognition with a long-running role in Take the High Road, before becoming widely known for playing Golly Mackenzie in Monarch of the Glen, which aired from 2000 to 2005.
His later work included appearances in River City, as well as roles in series such as Casualty, Shetland and Taggart.
Across his career, Morton became known for his grounded, understated performances and his ability to bring authenticity to his roles.
