Anderson Silva backs Jake Paul as a ‘real fighter’ ahead of Woodley bout

Former UFC champion Anderson Silva has publicly defended Jake Paul, calling the YouTuber-turned-boxer a “real fighter” and urging critics to give him credit for his impact on boxing.

Speaking to reporters ahead of his upcoming bout against Tyron Woodley on 19 December in Miami, Silva said Paul deserves recognition not only for his performances in the ring but also for the way he has reshaped interest in crossover boxing.

“The people do not give the credit to Jake, and the people need to do that,” Silva said. “I respect Jake. He is a real fighter.”

Silva lost to Paul in 2022, while Woodley suffered two defeats against the same opponent. Silva said he has watched both of Woodley’s fights with Paul as part of his preparation for their upcoming contest.

The Brazilian fighter was originally scheduled to face Chris Weidman before the match-up was changed. Despite the switch, Silva said he feels confident and focused heading into fight night.

He also praised Most Valuable Promotions, the company founded by Paul and his business partners, saying it has done “an amazing job” in promoting fighters and bringing new audiences to the sport.

Silva dismissed online criticism of Paul, accusing detractors of talking without putting in the same level of work.

“People who criticise him are not doing the same amount of work he is doing. They are just talking,” he said.

The heavyweight clash between Silva and Woodley is expected to draw major attention, with both men aiming to rebound after defeats to Paul.
