WEB DESK: In a groundbreaking move, Apple has recently acquired a patent that could pave the way for the launch of a foldable iPhone or iPad in the not-too-distant future.
The patent, reported by Patently Apple, focuses on innovative technology designed to prevent displays from creasing, potentially revolutionizing the tech industry.
According to reliable sources, Apple’s approach involves chemically thinning the display at the folding area, coupled with the use of different materials to maintain a seamlessly smooth surface.
Insiders from the tech hub of Korea have suggested that a 2026 launch is a plausible timeline, countering previous speculations by Ming-Chi Kuo, who hinted at a foldable 20.3” MacBook in 2027.
A key feature highlighted in Apple’s patent is the incorporation of grooves in the display area, addressed with a transparent cover layer overlapping the display panel.
The layer includes an elongated groove or recess running parallel to the bend axis, fortifying the locally thinned portion with a polymer.
This liquid polymer is deposited in the groove, originating from the thinned area, and is subsequently cured through UV light, heat, catalyst, and other cutting-edge techniques.
Interestingly, the patent suggests a potential overhaul of the glass composition, with the replacement of sodium by potassium on the surface.
This alteration is anticipated to induce compressive stress in treated surface layers, enhancing the glass’s ability to resist scratches and wear damage.
Apple’s foray into foldable devices, as indicated by this patent, signifies a monumental leap towards redefining the boundaries of technological innovation.
