Court approves five day physical remand for Blogger Asad Ali Toor

ISLAMABAD: A court on Tuesday approved a five-day physical remand for blogger and YouTuber Asad Ali Toor, who was arrested in connection with a malicious campaign against Supreme Court judges.

Asad Toor was arrested by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) on Monday when he visited the offices of the FIA in Islamabad to volunteer in an enquiry into concerted campaigns being orchestrated against judges on the media and social media.

On Tuesday, the FIA presented Toor before the District and Sessions Courts in Islamabad. Judicial Magistrate Muhammad Shabbir presided over the hearing, during which the FIA requested Toor’s physical remand.

Subsequently, Magistrate Shabbir granted the FIA’s request, allowing a five-day remand for Asad Ali Toor.

Toor, asserting his status as a journalist, refused to surrender his mobile phone during the proceedings, stating that he had already cooperated with the FIA twice.

His defense lawyer mentioned receiving a notice on February 24 and subsequently challenging it in the High Court.

On February 26, they presented themselves at the FIA office with the High Court’s order, seeking clarification on the allegations.

Meanwhile, Toor’s mother expressed bewilderment regarding her son’s arrest, stating that she was unaware of the charges against him and planned to file a petition. She emphasized her confusion regarding the circumstances leading to his arrest, indicating a lack of clarity on the matter.
