Azzi Fudd

Azzi Fudd was selected with the No. 1 overall pick by the Dallas Wings in the 2026 WNBA Draft, instantly becoming the centre of attention as she reunites with Paige Bueckers.

Fudd admitted the moment had not yet fully sunk in after hearing her name called.

“I’m not really sure I have words to describe that feeling,” she said.

Fudd-Bueckers reunion steals the spotlight

The biggest storyline of the night quickly became Fudd’s reunion with Bueckers, her former UConn teammate and long-time partner.

The duo, who have known each other for nearly a decade, helped lead UConn to a national championship in 2025, and their chemistry is expected to be a major boost for Dallas.

“Paige is an incredible player… someone that makes playing basketball easy,” Fudd said, adding that their familiarity will make the transition “easy”.

Wings lock in on Fudd as top choice

Dallas officials made it clear Fudd was always their No. 1 pick, despite a highly competitive draft class.

General manager Curt Miller highlighted her elite shooting, quick release and off-ball movement as key reasons behind the decision, while also praising her leadership and locker room presence.

Coach Jose Fernandez said improving three-point shooting and floor spacing had been a priority, making Fudd a natural fit.

“She was the right fit for this team,” he said.

A move backed by strategy and chemistry

The Wings’ recent moves in free agency, particularly strengthening their front court, only reinforced the decision to select Fudd.

Miller also confirmed that star players, including Bueckers, were part of ongoing conversations during the process, reflecting the collaborative nature of team-building at the professional level.

With Fudd now officially in Dallas, expectations are high as the Wings look to capitalise on one of the most talked-about partnerships in women’s basketball.
