Eight militants killed, six soldiers martyred in Hangu exchange of fire: ISPR

Eight militants were killed during an exchange of fire between security forces and militants in Hangu district on Sunday, according to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).

The exchange of fire took place when a security forces convoy engaged militants in the district, with eight militants killed in an effective engagement by the troops, ISPR said.

Two officers, Captain Abuzar Farooq, 23, from Gujranwala district and Lieutenant Sheraz Babar, 22, from Chakwal district, fought alongside their troops and embraced martyrdom during the operation, the military’s media wing said.

Four other soldiers were also killed in the intense exchange of fire, according to ISPR.

A sanitisation operation is underway in the area to eliminate any remaining militants, the statement said.

ISPR said the operation is part of the ongoing counterterrorism campaign under the vision of “Azm-e-Istehkam”.

“Security Forces and Law Enforcement Agencies of Pakistan will continue at full pace to wipe out the menace of foreign-sponsored and supported terrorism from the country,” the statement said.

The sacrifices of the soldiers further reinforce the country’s commitment to safeguarding the nation, ISPR added.

Meanwhile, President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif have lauded security forces for killing eight militants during the exchange of fire in Hangu and paid tribute to the two martyred officers and four soldiers who sacrificed their lives in defence of the country.

In separate statements, the president and prime minister expressed deep grief over the martyrdom of Captain Abuzar Farooq, Lieutenant Sheraz Babar and the other personnel, and extended heartfelt condolences to their families.

President Zardari said the sacrifices of the “brave sons” further strengthen the national resolve to eliminate terrorism from the country, according to Radio Pakistan.

PM Shehbaz said the martyred officers and soldiers demonstrated unparalleled courage and valour, adding that the entire nation salutes their sacrifices.
