MUMBAI: Indian authorities have asked Bollywood actor Imran Khan to leave the country by October 28, citing an alleged breach of immigration rules after he participated in a protest against the chief election commissioner, Indian media reported on Thursday.

Khan, 43, is a US citizen, The Indian Express reported. Indian law may treat foreign nationals’ participation in political protests as a violation of immigration and visa rules.

The Times of India reported that the actor had been given until October 28 to leave India.

Khan participated in a rally in Mumbai on October 10, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over revisions to voter lists that critics and opposition parties say favour Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s party.

“Apparently I’m going for a drive,” Khan wrote on Instagram on the day of the protest, sharing a picture of himself posing with a victory sign in the back of what appeared to be a police van.

According to The Indian Express, a complaint was filed against Khan at a Mumbai police station, alleging that he had breached the law.

The Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO), a federal government agency responsible for tracking and monitoring foreign nationals in India, subsequently issued him a notice to leave the country based on the complaint, the newspaper reported.

Khan did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Reuters.

Khan is the nephew of Bollywood actor Aamir Khan and comes from a prominent Indian film family.

He starred in several hit Bollywood films between 2008 and 2015 before abruptly retiring from acting.
