Bruce Dern has reflected on one of the greatest tragedies of his life, opening up about the death of his eldest daughter in a candid moment featured in a new documentary about his decades-long Hollywood career.

In Dernsie: The Amazing Life of Bruce Dern, the Oscar-nominated actor recalls the devastating loss of his daughter Diane Elizabeth, who drowned in a swimming pool at just 18 months old in 1962.

Dern, now 89, shared Diane Elizabeth with late actor Diane Ladd, whom he was married to from 1960 to 1969. The former couple later welcomed future Oscar winner Laura Dern in 1967.

Reflecting on the day of the tragedy, Dern recalled being interrupted while attending a sporting event and told to return home immediately.

According to the documentary, Diane Elizabeth had been at the family’s Los Angeles home with a maid while both parents were away. Dern explained that the toddler managed to unlock a gate leading to the swimming pool before the accident occurred.

Looking back on the moment, the actor described the heartbreak of returning home and seeing his daughter after her death.

“It’s the only time in my life, I think, that it broke my heart,” Dern said in the documentary, adding: “I never got over it. You never get over it.”

The actor also reflected on how the loss affected his relationship with Ladd, admitting the shared grief kept them together longer than they otherwise might have stayed.

“Because Diane and I shared a tragedy, we stayed together longer than we should have,” Dern said, before explaining that the pain surrounding the loss was never fully discussed between them.

Years later, the couple welcomed Laura Dern, who appears in the documentary and joined her father at the film’s Cannes Film Festival premiere.

Ladd, a three-time Oscar nominee, died in November 2025 at the age of 89. In the documentary, she appears briefly in a video message thanking Bruce “for the children you gave me”, a moment that adds emotional weight to the family’s story.

The documentary premiered at Cannes this week, where Bruce and Laura Dern appeared together in support of the deeply personal project.

For Dern, however, the film revisits more than a celebrated acting career. It also shines a light on a loss he says never truly faded.
