LAHORE: The Punjab Assembly on Thursday passed the “Police Order Amendment Act 2025”, empowering to the recently established Crime Control Department (CCD) to investigate major heinous crime cases.
According to the amendment, the CCD will now be responsible for investigating cases such as kidnapping for ransom, robbery, acid attacks, car snatching, and crimes involving murder or rape during robbery.
The CCD will also investigate cases related to bank heists and attacks on public servants.
The amendment further said that the Punjab police inspector general would have the authority to refer any case or matter to the CCD for investigation.
In February, the Punjab government approved the establishment of the CCD to control organised crimes and protect life and property across the province.
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz gave approval while presiding over a meeting.
In July, Lahore police reported a significant drop in major crimes during the first half of 2025, attributing the decrease to improved policing strategies, targeted patrols, and the use of modern technology.
According to official data, 12,484 serious crimes were reported from January to June this year, compared to 24,445 during the same period in 2024 and 39,260 in 2023.
