Pakistan marked a major step in strengthening its naval capabilities with the commissioning of its first Hangor-class submarine, PNS Hangor, in a ceremony held in Sanya, according to Inter-Services Public Relations.

President Asif Ali Zardari attended the event as the chief guest, while Admiral Naveed Ashraf formally inspected the newly inducted submarine. Officials described the addition of the Hangor-class platform as a key milestone in the ongoing modernization of the Pakistan Navy.

Speaking at the ceremony, President Zardari emphasized that enhancing maritime strength is essential for safeguarding Pakistan’s sovereignty and ensuring a credible defense posture at sea. He noted that modern naval assets like the Hangor-class submarines will significantly boost the country’s ability to respond to evolving security challenges.

Naval Chief Admiral Naveed Ashraf highlighted the growing importance of secure sea lanes, warning that disruptions to major maritime routes pose serious risks to global trade and energy supplies. He stated that advanced submarines will play a crucial role in protecting critical shipping corridors and maintaining regional stability.

Recalling history, the Naval Chief pointed to the legacy of the original Hangor submarine, which gained distinction during the Indo-Pak War of 1971 as the first submarine since World War II to sink an enemy vessel. He said the new Hangor-class represents both continuity and technological advancement.

The commissioning ceremony also underscored the deepening strategic partnership between Pakistan and China, with officials describing the project as a symbol of longstanding defense cooperation between the two countries.
