Committee formed to probe into Khawaja Shams ul Islam killing

KARACHI: An investigation committee has been formed to probe into the murder of senior lawyer Khawaja Shams ul Islam, who was gunned down on Aug 1 at a funeral in Defence Phase VI.

According to officials, the committee will work under the supervision of DIG South and includes representatives from the Sindh High Court Bar Association, police officers, and members of the prosecution.

The committee aims to ensure effective case follow-up and justice delivery, the officials said.

It will oversee transparent investigations and provide assistance to the prosecution throughout the case proceedings, they added.

Members of the committee include High Court Bar President Barrister Sarfaraz Ali Metlo, Vice President Rajab Lakho, DIG South Asad Raza, SSP Mahzoor Ali, and SP Investigation.

Separate committee already working

Khawaja Shams ul Islam was shot dead outside a mosque in Karachi’s DHA. Two others, including his son, were injured in the attack. Following the incident, Sindh Home Minister Ziaul Hassan Lanjar had ordered immediate action to apprehend those responsible.

A separate six-member inquiry team headed by SSP Keamari was also formed. The team includes officers from Clifton, Darakhshan police station, and the investigation branch.

Meanwhile, the suspect in the Khawaja Shams ul Islam murder case — Imran Afridi — has already confessed to the crime in a video statement circulated on social media.

‘Killed Khawaja Shams ul Islam to avenge my father’

In the video, he accused the slain lawyer of subjecting his father to torture and falsely implicating him in legal cases.

Afridi claimed he took the step out of frustration, saying: ““I had a personal enmity with Shams ul Islam and I alone killed him. My friends, family and relatives have nothing to do with this. I was a peaceful citizen, but injustice has turned me into a criminal, and I deeply regret that.”

Imran Afridi alleged that Shams ul Islam and his father were once friends but had a falling out over Rs3.5 million.

According to him, the lawyer not only physically assaulted his father but also had him jailed on false charges, pushing him into mental illness.

Imran Afridi further claimed that a year later, Khawaja Shams ul Islam kidnapped and tortured his father again before shooting him dead.
