ISLAMABAD: A seven-member constitutional bench headed by Supreme Court Judge Justice Aminuddin Khan on Tuesday dismissed a petition challenging the extension in the tenure of the army chief.

The petition was dismissed due to non-appearance of the petitioner, while the registrar office’s objections regarding the petition were upheld.

The Supreme Court’s bench heard the petition filed by Mahmood Akhtar Naqvi, challenging the extension in the army chief’s service term. However, the petitioner failed to appear before the court, leading to the dismissal of the case on the grounds of non-prosecution.

Earlier, the federal cabinet approved amendments to the Army Act, extending the service terms of all service chiefs to five years.

Later, a bill was presented in Parliament and received approval from both the National Assembly and the Senate by a majority vote.
