Daniel Craig has made a candid confession about his life after James Bond, admitting that stepping away from the iconic role has brought him a sense of freedom he did not expect.
The actor, who played 007 for 15 years from 2006 to 2021, is now firmly in a new era of his career, most recently reprising detective Benoit Blanc in the newly released third Knives Out film, Wake Up Dead Man. Speaking in a new interview with Radio Times, Craig said leaving Bond behind has completely changed how he approaches his work.
“I’m not saying no to things that I might have been a little bit wary about before,” he said. “When the Bond thing was going on in my life, the contrast between that and another role would sometimes feel self-conscious.”
Now, he says, the pressure has lifted. “I’m working harder than I ever have, but I’m also just enjoying it more than I ever have. I get to do really interesting, different stuff.”
Life after Bond

Since ending his Bond run with No Time to Die, Craig has moved towards more character-driven roles, including his eccentric turn as Benoit Blanc. He has also confirmed that he is open to continuing the Knives Out franchise for as long as director Rian Johnson continues to reinvent the detective.
Craig’s honesty marks a noticeable shift from the physical and emotional toll of his Bond years. While filming Spectre, he broke his leg, later admitting he struggled with the demands of returning to the role at the time. His infamous remark that he would rather “slash his wrists” than do another Bond film was later clarified as frustration born out of exhaustion.
“I finished filming Spectre with a broken leg,” he later reflected. “I was thinking, I don’t know if I can do another one of these. I needed a break.”

Despite that fatigue, Craig has acknowledged that the franchise transformed his life financially, giving him long-term stability and security for his family.
What happens next for the Bond franchise
With Craig officially stepping away after No Time to Die, the search continues for the next actor to step into the famous tuxedo. Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Taron Egerton and Callum Turner are among the names most frequently linked to the role.
The franchise is also entering a new creative chapter following Amazon’s acquisition of MGM, which handed the tech giant control of Bond’s future. Earlier this year, Dune director Denis Villeneuve was announced as the filmmaker set to direct the next instalment.
For Craig, however, the focus is firmly on reinvention. After years defined by one of cinema’s most demanding roles, he now appears more content than ever shaping his career on his own terms.
