Denmark’s Queen Margrethe II shocking fall! What you need to know


Queen Margrethe II of Denmark made headlines when she was hospitalised following a fall at her lavish residence, the Fredensborg Castle.

The octogenarian former queen was hospitalised following a fall at her lavish residence, the Fredensborg Castle.

She was admitted to the Copenhagen’s University Hospital for medical observation.

The Director of Communication for the Danish Royal Palace provided an update on the queen’s health. “Given the circumstances, the queen is doing well but has not been admitted for observation for the time being”.

Subsequent reports from the palace confirmed that the former Danish queen sustained injuries, including damage to her neck vertebrae and a fracture in her left hand.

The queen’s eldest son and reigning Danish monarch, King Frederik X addressed the media as well outside an event he was attending. He assured the journalists that his mother was “in good hands”.

The Danish king said that they were taking things “day by day”. He also noted that the medical team would determine the appropriate course of her recovery.

Queen Margrethe was scheduled to attend a huge event to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Department of Archaeology at Aarhus University. Archaeology is a field the former queen had passionately supported throughout her reign.

The former Danish monarch has often stated that archeology was the career she would have pursued had she not ascended the throne.

She abdicated the Danish throne back in January, marking the first time in nearly nine centuries that a Danish monarch stepped down. Despite this, she remains a beloved figure in the European country.

Her decision to abdicate was influenced by health challenges, including a back surgery that greatly limited her ability to fulfill royal duties.

Following her hospitalisation, the palace announced that Queen Margrethe was in “good spirits” but will require an extended recovery period.

While she returned to the Fredensborg Castle, all public engagements were cancelled as she recovers.

The queen’s hand could be seen in a cast and she will have to wear a stiff neck collar for the coming months as part of the recovery process.
