ISLAMABAD – A video circulating widely on social media has brought to light the stark disparities between the elite and the common man in Pakistan. The video captures a moment where a commuter, driving through Islamabad’s red zone, stops by a posh residential building, jestingly asking a security guard if he can go inside to purchase a flat.
The guard’s response, dripping with sarcasm, highlights the chasm between the country’s elite and even its middle class. “How can you buy an apartment in there?” he retorts, suggesting the commuter first upgrade his vehicle to a V8 Land Cruiser before even considering entering the premises.
The guard goes on to name-drop some of the building’s alleged high-profile residents, including Chairman PTI, his sister Aleema Khan, and former Chief Justice Saqib Nisar.
While many netizens like Farhan Virk have criticized the former prime minister with Toshakhana references, others have rallied to label the video as “planted.”
Regardless of the video’s authenticity or intent, one fact remains indisputable: owning an apartment at One Constitution Avenue is a dream only a select few can afford. Local real estate listings indicate that an apartment in this building can fetch prices exceeding Rs200 million (over $650,000), a sum unimaginable for the vast majority of Pakistanis.
