WEB DESK: Hossam Hassan’s coaching career has yet to match his legendary playing days, but the Egyptian coach could face a breakthrough if his team upsets Argentina at the World Cup on Tuesday.

A prolific former striker and Egypt’s all-time leading goalscorer, Hassan was also one of the most capped internationals and played at the 1990 World Cup. He won multiple Africa Cup of Nations titles and enjoyed a decorated playing career.

His managerial journey, however, has been inconsistent and often controversial, marked by frequent job changes and clashes with fans and media. He has also faced disciplinary issues, including a recent incident where he reacted angrily to criticism during the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

Despite this, Hassan has recently led Egypt to improved form. He secured their first World Cup win since their debut in 1934, beating New Zealand 3-1, followed by a victory over Australia to reach the last 32, boosting his reputation.

Earlier setbacks, including criticism after a semi-final loss to Senegal, mentioned his volatile reputation, and his appointment had initially been questioned due to past controversies.

Still, under his leadership, Egypt have shown strong defensive organisation, went unbeaten in World Cup qualifying, and reached the Africa Cup of Nations semi-finals.

“My genes do not accept defeat,” he said ahead of the tournament.

Now at the World Cup in Canada, Mexico, and the USA, Egypt sit second in their group after drawing with Belgium and beating Australia, and will next face reigning champions Argentina in a huge test.
