England take quick Pakistan wickets after being bowled out for 290

LONDON: Pakistan lost two early wickets after England were bowled out for 290 on the second day of the second Test at Lord’s on Friday, with Josh Tongue striking with the final ball before lunch to leave the visitors reeling at 16-2.

Tongue had earlier scored an impressive unbeaten 30 in a last-wicket stand of 47 with Gus Atkinson, helping England add 42 runs to their overnight 248-9 and frustrate Pakistan.

Pakistan faced a difficult final hour before lunch as England’s pace attack, led by an electrifying spell from Jofra Archer, probed for early wickets.

Archer made the breakthrough when Shan Masood edged a 91mph delivery through to wicketkeeper Jamie Smith.

Tongue then removed Abdullah Shafique, who was given out after a review showed he had edged an attempted drive.

Earlier, Atkinson fell for 45 from 46 balls when he hit an Ali Usman delivery down the ground to Mohammad Ali, who took the catch.

England’s bowlers continued to apply pressure after their lower-order resistance had lifted them to 290.

Archer also thought he had Azan Awais caught behind, but Pakistan successfully reviewed the decision.

Tongue returned for a second spell before the interval and struck again, dismissing Shafique to give England the upper hand at lunch.
