WEB DESK: England extended their advantage in the first Ashes Test at Optus Stadium on Saturday, reaching 92 for six in their second innings at lunch, leading Australia by 132 runs. Captain Ben Stokes went back after making just 2 runs while Mitchell Starc made his mark by taking 10 wickets so far.
Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope were the architects of England’s strong position, compiling a quick 50-run partnership that put pressure on Australia’s fielders. Duckett survived a contentious lbw decision off Scott Boland after a review overturned the original call, while Pope’s aggressive strokeplay highlighted England’s intent to dominate early in the session.
Australia’s bowlers, led by Nathan Lyon and Brydon Carse, showed flashes of control. Lyon returned to the field after a hip knock and immediately drew a thick edge from Carse, which Duckett took at gully. Mitchell Starc, meanwhile, produced moments of brilliance in the field, including a spectacular catch off Zak Crawley’s drive, earning applause from the Perth crowd.
Earlier, Australia had been bowled out for 132 in their first innings, with England’s Ben Stokes wreaking havoc on the lower order. His five-wicket haul (5/23) marked the best figures by an England captain in Australia and the third-best overseas, setting the tone for his team.
Amid the on-field action, Cricket Australia defended Usman Khawaja, who had faced criticism for playing golf prior to the Test. CEO Todd Greenberg said the opener’s preparation was sound, emphasizing his experience and knowledge of his body.
England will look to build on their early dominance as they aim to stretch their lead further in the second innings, keeping Australia under pressure in what promises to be a fast-paced Ashes opener.
