FBR extends tax return filing deadline

ISLAMABAD: The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has extended the deadline for filing income tax returns for Tax Year 2026 to October 15, providing taxpayers with additional time to complete their returns.

The development comes a day after the FBR had reminded taxpayers that September 30 was the last date for filing their income tax returns and warned of significantly higher penalties for those missing the deadline.

The revenue authority has now extended the filing deadline to October 15.

Earlier, taxpayers who failed to file their returns by September 30 had been warned that they could face higher penalties from October 1.

The FBR had said that individuals could face a penalty of up to Rs25,000, while the penalties for associations of persons and companies could rise to Rs50,000 and Rs100,000, respectively.

The FBR had earlier dismissed as fake a notification circulating on social media claiming that the deadline had been extended, saying no such circular had been issued at the time.

The extension follows repeated requests from trade bodies, chambers and tax professionals, who had cited technical problems with the IRIS portal, delays in the issuance of return forms and difficulties faced by taxpayers in completing their filings.
