Female news anchor found shot dead at home in Rawalpindi, husband taken into custody

RAWALPINDI: Female television anchor and programme host Rabia Ahsan was found shot dead at her home on Adiala Road in Rawalpindi on Sunday, police said, adding that her husband had been taken into custody and the suspected murder weapon seized.

Ahsan was associated with private news channel 92 News, which also confirmed her death.

Rawalpindi police said City Police Officer (CPO) Hassan Mushtaq Sukhera immediately reached the scene after being informed of the shooting.

Sukhera said police received a report regarding Rabia Ahsan, who, he said, was associated with a private television channel.

Speaking to the media at the scene, he said her body was found inside a room at the house.

Police are investigating the incident from all angles, he added.

The CPO said Ahsan’s husband, Ahsan, had been taken into custody as part of the investigation.

Senior police officials, including the SSP Operations and SSP Investigation, were also present at the residence as the investigation got under way.

Police said Ahsan’s husband had been taken into custody, while the weapon believed to have been used in the shooting had also been seized.

Teams from the Punjab Forensic Science Agency (PFSA) were collecting evidence from the scene, police said.

The body was being shifted to a hospital for a post-mortem examination, which is expected to help investigators determine further details about the shooting.

Police said a case was being registered and assured that the investigation would be conducted on merit.

Found dead at home

Earlier, rescue sources said Ahsan had been found dead at her residence in Rawalpindi’s Gulshanabad area on Adiala Road after suffering a gunshot wound.

Rescue personnel reached the house after receiving information about the incident, while police officers and forensic teams were subsequently called to the scene.

Police have not released details about the husband’s possible role or whether anyone else may have been present at the time of the shooting. The motive behind the incident is also yet to be established and is expected to be determined as the investigation progresses.

Earlier social media activity

In an earlier post on social media, Rabia Ahsan had commented on the One Constitution Avenue matter, referring to previous joint investigation team reports and cabinet committees formed in connection with the issue.

She had also referred to court proceedings related to programmes on One Constitution Avenue and made remarks about people who had allegedly received apartments in connection with the project.

However, there is currently no official evidence linking her earlier social media activity or comments on One Constitution Avenue to her death, and any connection between the two would be speculative at this stage.
