Fire brought under control at Karachi grid station, power supply disrupted

KARACHI: A fire that broke out at a K-Electric grid station near Baloch Colony Bridge in Karachi was brought under control on Tuesday after nearly an hour of firefighting, while power supply to several areas was disrupted, the city’s chief fire officer said.

Chief Fire Officer Humayun Khan said the blaze erupted in three panels at the grid station, with fuel tanks located above the affected panels.

“When we reached the site, the flames were 30 to 40 feet high,” Khan said, adding that no casualties were reported in the incident.

He said eight fire tenders and two water bowsers were deployed to extinguish the fire, which had been classified by the fire brigade as a third-degree blaze.

Cooling operation underway

Khan said the fire had been brought under control and firefighters were carrying out cooling operations at the site.

Fire officials had also called for water supplies from nearby hydrants to support the firefighting operation.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known, and officials said a detailed assessment would be possible after the cooling process was completed.

Power supply affected

The blaze disrupted electricity supply from the grid station, with outages reported in Mahmoodabad and areas around PECHS Society, causing difficulties for residents.

Power supply was suspended in several surrounding areas following the fire, while firefighters continued cooling operations at the site.

Officials said the cooling process was expected to be completed soon, after which the condition of the affected equipment and the cause of the fire would be assessed.
