Generator fumes kill two, leave four hospitalised in Karachi’s Korangi

KARACHI: Two people died and four others were admitted to hospital after generator fumes filled a room in Karachi’s Bhittai Colony in the Korangi Crossing area, police and rescue officials said on Tuesday.

According to rescue officials, six people were found unconscious after generator fumes built up inside a room of a house. Emergency responders rushed to the scene and shifted all six victims to Indus Hospital Korangi for treatment.

Two die during treatment

Rescue officials said two of the six victims were in critical condition and died during treatment at the hospital. The deceased were aged 18 and 20, while the remaining four were said to be out of danger.

Police said the occupants had switched on a generator after a power outage in the morning. The fumes reportedly filled the room, causing all six men to lose consciousness.

According to police, a man arrived in the morning to switch on the water pump and found all six occupants unconscious after opening the door. He alerted the authorities, following which rescue teams and police responded.

Police said all the affected individuals were labourers employed at a hotel and were living together in a rented house. One of the victims belongs to Hyderabad, while the others are from Nawabshah.

Police said further investigation into the incident was under way.
