Gilgit-Baltistan shaken by moderate earthquake, no major damage reported


An earthquake measuring 4.5 on the Richter scale rattled various parts of Gilgit-Baltistan including the Ghizer district

GAHKOCH: A 4.5 magnitude earthquake struck various parts of Gilgit-Baltistan, particularly the Ghizer district, sending tremors through the region.

No major damage or casualties have been reported so far.

According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), the earthquake’s epicentre is located along the Afghanistan-Tajikistan border. However, with a depth of 102 kilometres (km), the quake’s impact was felt across the bordering areas.

The authorities are closely monitoring the situation.

Seismic activity is not uncommon in the region due to the convergence and collision of several tectonic plates.

Meanwhile, authorities have advised residents to remain vigilant and follow safety protocols in case of any aftershocks.

Earlier, an earthquake with a magnitude of 4.9 shook Swat, Mingora, and nearby areas.

The quake’s epicentre was in Swat and about 142 km underground. As per PMD, the earthquake originated in the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan.
