Gilgit-Baltistan successfully tests 5G service

GILGIT: The Special Communications Organisation (SCO) has successfully conducted a trial of 5G mobile service in Gilgit-Baltistan, opening up the possibility of faster internet connectivity in the mountainous region.

According to a statement issued by the SCO, the successful 5G trial was conducted on Saturday.

The organisation said that the introduction of 5G technology would create new opportunities in several sectors, including information technology, e-commerce, online education, telemedicine, tourism and digital entrepreneurship.

The development is expected to particularly benefit young people in Gilgit-Baltistan by providing faster internet connectivity for digital work, education and entrepreneurship, the SCO said.

The organisation described the 5G trial as an important step towards expanding digital connectivity in the region and improving access to advanced high-speed internet technology.

The development comes amid calls for Gilgit-Baltistan to be included in Pakistan’s 5G rollout. Questions had been raised over the region’s access to the new technology when 5G services were rolled out in other parts of the country earlier this year.

The SCO said faster connectivity could help expand opportunities for people working in the IT and digital sectors, while also supporting e-commerce, telemedicine, online education and tourism.

The trial marks a significant development in Gilgit-Baltistan’s digital connectivity, although the statement did not specify when commercial 5G services would be formally launched across the region.
