Google Play to roll out smart battery alerts for android apps

Google Play

WEB DESK: Google is stepping up its Android optimisation game. Starting March 1, 2026, Google Play will introduce a battery usage alert system designed to warn users about apps that secretly drain power in the background.

The new feature leverages Android’s background activity tracking to detect apps that keep devices awake using partial wakelocks, a process where an app prevents the phone from entering deep sleep even when the screen is off.

If an app logs more than two hours of unnecessary wakelocks within a 24-hour window, and if at least 5 per cent of recent user sessions (over an 8–20 day period) show this behavior, Google Play will flag it as a high battery usage app.

Users will then see a warning label on the app’s Play Store page, indicating that the app “may use more battery than expected due to high background activity.”

Google says this move aims to give users more transparency and control over how their apps impact device performance and battery life. Developers, on the other hand, will have to optimize their background processes or risk their apps being marked as battery hogs.

Experts are calling this update a win for Android users, as it empowers them to identify and manage power-hungry apps – potentially extending battery life without third-party tools or guesswork.

In short, starting next year, Google Play will not just rate your favorite apps by stars, it will also rate them by battery discipline.
